Volunteer Positions and Job Descriptions 2017
Docents for the Art & Heritage Exhibition | Seaside Centre: October 6 to 22
Love art? Love local history? Docents greet the general public at the Seaside Centre during the Art Exhibition and Heritage Exhibit, and help serve as guides.
There will be an hour long docent orientation and briefing on Wednesday, October 12 at 5:00pm to learn all about the show firsthand from the curators. Volunteer docents will be asked to keep statistics about how many visitors attend. There will always be minimum two volunteers working together per shift. Shifts are usually 3 hours, with seating provided for the not-so-busy times.
In 2016, over 1600 visitors came through the Art Exhibition over ten days, and 600 school students on scheduled tours.
Box Office Assistants for Performance Events: October 6, 13, 14 or 21
Box Office Assistants at the FOUR ticketed events will help the Box Office Manager to sell and take tickets at the door and hopefully, get everyone seated in time for the performances.
Box Office Assistants will be welcome to watch the performance once the ticket and cash reconciliation is complete and late comers are seated. Box Office Assistants at the Emerging Sounds performance at the Sechelt Nation Community Hall (Saturday October 14) will work the door under the direction of the Box Office Manager. Audience members may enter and leave throughout the evening as this event is more of a party atmosphere.
Production Assistants for Music Café & Origin Stories Events at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre (Oct 14 and 15)
Under the direction of the Production Manager, Production Assistants will set up the space, greet and seat audience members, assist performers and help clean up at the end of the two hour events.
This job can best be described as “hurry up and wait” with a scrambling of activity before and after each performance or workshop and quiet observation while the show takes place.
Volunteers may attend the peeformance events.
OPENING reception Set Up & Clean Up, Bartending and Food Servers (Thursday Oct 5) - 4:30pm - 9:30pm
The festival opens with a big party at the Seaside Centre on the evening of Thursday, October 5. Volunteers are required to help load supplies in and out, set up tables and party supplies, run a cash bar and keep food trays circulating and replenished. This is an “on your feet” type of job requiring an ability to tote and carry.
Workshop Volunteers - Lend a hand? Sign up attendees? Learn something new?
There are seven different educational workshops (from tap & flamenco dancing, to cedar basket-making, drum making, learning how to make large scale video visuals, letterpress origins of type workshop, or how to make your family tree. Every workshop could use a helping hand to help sign in guests, help organize materials, or pass out information. As a volunteer you can attend to watch the workshop or even participate for free.
The Sechelt Arts Festival runs on your volunteer help, from the festival advisory committee, to the box office and front of house helpers, to art show docents, to reception organizers and tear down crews. Without volunteers, this festival simply would not be possible.
